FAQ

If you own a PV system in Switzerland, you don't have to settle for low feed-in tariffs anymore. Traditionally, utilities pay producers only 0.03–0.10 CHF per kWh for surplus solar, while reselling electricity to consumers at 0.20–0.30 CHF per kWh.

With UpGrid, you can sell your surplus solar energy directly to local consumers inside a renewable energy community:

  • Earn more: often up to 2–3x higher than standard feed-in tariffs.
  • Stay local: your energy goes to neighbors, not just back into the grid.
  • Simple process: UpGrid handles contracts, billing, and matching demand with your production.

By signing up today, you can already secure your spot as a producer and be ready to monetize your surplus through Switzerland's new Lokale Energiegemeinschaften (LEGs) as the law comes into effect in 2026.

In most cases, no extra equipment is required beyond what you already have. If your PV system is connected to the grid, you can export surplus electricity. The key requirement is a smart meter, which most Swiss households will have by 2027 due to the national rollout.

With UpGrid, once your smart meter is in place:

  • Producers can sell surplus solar energy directly to local consumers.
  • No new panels, batteries, or inverters are needed — we work with your existing setup.
  • UpGrid handles the contracts, billing, and matching automatically.

This means that if you already produce solar power, you're essentially ready to start selling locally with UpGrid.

Yes — but only under specific frameworks. Today, Swiss law allows collective self-consumption (ZEV) inside a single building or site, where solar producers can share electricity with tenants or co-owners. Selling directly across the street is not yet permitted under current regulation.

That changes in 2026 with the new Lokale Energiegemeinschaften (LEGs) law. LEGs make peer-to-peer energy trading through the public grid fully legal, allowing producers to sell solar power directly to neighbors in the same community.

With UpGrid, you don't need to worry about the legal details:

  • We ensure compliance with Swiss energy regulations.
  • Producers can already pre-register their PV plants today.
  • Consumers can sign up to be first in line for local green energy once LEGs go live.

UpGrid is the easiest way to prepare for legal, fair, and local peer-to-peer energy trading in Switzerland.

For businesses and SMEs with PV systems, selling surplus electricity locally can create a new and more profitable revenue stream.

  • Feed-in tariffs from utilities typically range only 0.03–0.10 CHF per kWh.
  • By selling through an UpGrid energy community, businesses can often achieve 0.15–0.20 CHF per kWh — up to 2–3x higher returns.

Example:

An SME generating 50,000 kWh of surplus per year would earn around 1,500–5,000 CHF via traditional feed-in. Through UpGrid, this could increase to 7,500–10,000 CHF annually.

Why it matters for SMEs:

  • Higher margins: capture more value from your existing PV assets.
  • Local impact: supply green electricity directly to customers, tenants, or partners.
  • Simple operations: UpGrid manages contracts, billing, and compliance so your team can focus on the core business.

With UpGrid, your solar investment becomes not just a sustainability asset, but also a scalable revenue driver.

Traditional feed-in tariffs (KEV) paid solar producers a fixed price for surplus electricity fed into the grid. These subsidies officially ended in February 2024, and today utilities usually pay only 0.03–0.10 CHF per kWh. Consumers, meanwhile, still pay 0.20–0.30 CHF per kWh to buy electricity back from the grid.

UpGrid changes this model:

  • Producers earn more: often 0.15–0.20 CHF per kWh, up to 2–3x higher than feed-in tariffs.
  • Consumers pay less: access local solar energy below standard retail prices.
  • Value stays local: instead of going to utilities, the benefit is shared between producers and their neighbors.

With the end of KEV and the start of Lokale Energiegemeinschaften (LEGs) in 2026, UpGrid offers the fair, future-proof alternative — making local energy trading more rewarding for producers and more affordable for consumers.
